West of what? Well, traditionally The West End was simply west of the City of London: a space for the well-heeled to live away from the smoke, crowds and commerce. Part of the City of Westminster, it’s now a centre of entertainment, diplomacy, shopping, and of course, upmarket property. Away from the centre of some of the West End's more hectic neighbourhoods like Soho, Covent Garden and Charing Cross, you’ll find quieter streets lined with traditional Victorian and Georgian terraced houses. It’s still an excellent choice for upscale families and professionals wanting a slice of real London life.
Being commonly known as London's Theatreland, it goes without saying that this is the place to see all the latest and greatest shows and performances. There is always something to watch, from comedy at The Apollo to classics at Shaftesbury Theatre.
You are also lucky to be close to some of the city's famous shopping streets including Bond Street, Regent Street and Marylebone High Street - perfect for your retail therapy. For your dose of culture, The National Gallery, The Royal Academy of Arts or The British Museum is plentiful.
Being one of the busiest areas in London means there are many great pubs and places to eat. Get your fix of quirkiness from the Coach and Horses, Soho’s most famous pub, explore the exotic with Archipelago sensory dining experience or keep it simple with Pierre Victoire French cuisine.
You have the luxury of plenty of tube and train stations, including Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Tottenham Court Garden, Charing Cross and Victoria Station. If you’re someone who loves to travel, the Eurostar is just on your doorstep, plus you are only 15 minutes away from Heathrow. Central London is reachable by car and some of the newer housing developments offer underground parking.
And finally, how about schools? Well, perhaps those of you planning a move to the West End might consider the private Westminster School, which has turned out six Prime Ministers to date. They’ve just announced a move to full co-ed status – so start saving today…
