Islington is a popular family choice due to its period Victorian homes on quiet backstreets; they are charming, rare and full of character, matching the area's personality. Canonbury Square is lined with beautiful Georgian terrace houses, and Thornhill Square stands out by being built around a church. Looking for a London bolthole? The newly renovated Vantage Point could be for you: a redeveloped tower above Archway station with some of the best views in the area and a stunning roof terrace, too.
Islington is famous for its colourful culture and diversity, shown in its various restaurants, cafes and bars. One of the area's neighbourhoods, Angel, is renowned for being a hive of activity. On Upper Street, you can browse the wealth of trendy independent shops, laugh at The Angel Comedy Club or watch a film at the independently run Electric Cinema. If you're a football fan, you are bound to know that Islington is the home to Arsenal's home ground, Emirates Stadium. Other attractions include Salder's Well Theatre and the London Canal Museum.
There is an impressive selection of food and clothing shops, traditional pubs and restaurants, both independent and well-known favourites. Check out the Westerns Laundry on Drayton Park for fine-dining small plates (tagline: ‘The best restaurant you have never heard of’). Grab lunch at the legendary Ottolenghi’s – still CNN Traveller’s number 1 choice – or head to the famous Hope and Anchor, where The Clash and U2 once played.
Islington is big: 242,000 people live in the borough, stretching from Pentonville Road in the South to Stroud Green in the North. Luckily, it’s also one of the best-connected places to live in London. Jump on the Northern Line at Angel, Victoria Line at Highbury & Islington or the Piccadilly line via Caledonia Road and Holloway. The area has plenty of bus stops and stations running day and night. If you're driving, the closest main roads are the A1 and A501.
